Day with Girls in Blue
Local students participated in a ‘Girls in Blue’ day with female police members recently.
The exciting opportunity took students from the Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe Valley on a tour of their local police stations and later, a presentation from police members and the opportunity to ask about a career in policing one-on-one.
The initiative was led by Warragul Police leading senior constable Paula Fowler who said the day was a great opportunity for girls to hear about a variety of career pathways within Victoria Police.
At Warragul Police Station students began the tour in the break room, with leading sen const Fowler and acting sergeant Kiara Roffey who showed them the heavy police gear they have to wear while working and explained their roles in the force. They then met a variety of other staff members, including Aboriginal Liason Officer sergeant John Roberts and public servants who work in other departments.
Highlights of the tour included a visit to the station’s watch house, Criminal Investigation Unit office and holding cells.
After the station tour, which was replicated for other student groups at Moe and Traralgon Police Stations, students attended a presentation by local policewomen and a barbeque lunch. After lunch, students were able to select two police members to sit down, hear about the police member’s story and ask questions.
Some members worked in general duties, in a Criminal Investigation Unit, highway patrol and in other areas of the police force.
Students were able to take home information about joining the police force and the steps they can take to start the recruitment process once they leave school.
