Getting rid of gas is not the answer
The Victorian gas network supplies over 2 million households, that is a whopping 76% of Victorian homes* relying on gas to power things like hot water, cooking and heating.
Not to mention the businesses and manufacturers relying on gas.
In fact, during the winter months, gas infrastructure delivers more energy than the electricity network**.
And despite more than 20 years of R&D into solar, it still only accounts for around 30% of electricity being consumed by Victorian households.
So, if we reduce natural gas usage, most of the energy demand would shift to the Victorian electricity grid which is currently powered by 70% coal-based electricity, an energy source with five times the carbon emissions of natural gas and an electricity network that is already struggling to meet demand.
Yes, Australia is facing some big energy challenges, as is the rest of the world.
But before you buy into media saying getting rid of gas is for the greater good, ask yourself – is it really?
Any gas we don’t want in Australia will still be used in overseas markets.
They can’t get enough of it. And we’ll be stuck with all-electric homes; pushing the demand far beyond the capabilities of our electricity network, which is sure to result in increased energy bills and frequent power outages.
While we wait with bated breath for largescale energy solutions with net-zero emissions, it’s import we continue to use diverse sources of energy and have a CHOICE. Don’t let bullies make choices for you by scrapping gas.
