One Gippsland that represents the region’s six municipal councils, industry, tourism, educationa­l and indigenous organisati­ons said the federal budget included new funding programs to benefit the region.

Key among them were a total of $1 billion in the new Growing Regions and Regional Precincts and Partnershi­p programs to support investment.

Chair Kellie O’Callaghan, who is also mayor of Latrobe City, said One Gippsland welcomed funding allocated for roads infrastruc­ture and safety measures, vocational and educationa­l training, digital connectivi­ty upgrades especially $200 million over five years for regions, a total of $230 million to state and local government for disaster readiness and resilience, funding of a regional first home buyer guarantee and $15 billion nationally to finance projects that expand industrial bases, diversify local economies and grow regional centres.

Cr O’Callaghan said regional health care services would be increased with funding of $143 million over four years, to be invested in primary care services, training, workforce incentives and trials of innovative models of care.

Baw Baw Shire also welcomed funding announceme­nts that reflected council’s advocacy work over the past 12 months, including a $250 million expansion of the Local Roads and Community Infrastruc­ture Program, taking this program through to 2025-26 and a total value of $3.25 billion.

Council said the new Growing Regions Program and Precincts and Partnershi­ps Program would provide council with additional opportunit­ies to seek funding for the proposed Warragul culture and connection precinct.

Council also welcomed an extra $100 million in Financial Assistance Grants, taking the total value of these grants to $2.92 billion this year; $80 million to support councils to provide heavy vehicle rest stops on their roads and $32 million over four years to help councils improve disability access and build up to 400 “Changing Places” toilets.
