Up and down for Garfield

-

Garfield Bowling Club’s results were very much all up or all down this week.

Midweek

The division three side visited Yarragon on Tuesday to play on a very wet grass green.

This made for a significant home ground advantage for their opponents, resulting in an overall 45-shot loss.

Division three: Garfield lost to Yarragon 36/81

The rink that of Margaret Hyam, Richard Ross, Lexi Taylor and skip Helene Newton jumped away from their opposition to be up 15/4 halfway through the game. Yarragon came back determinedly to draw within five shots, but the Garfielders held on to win 21/15.

That was where the good news ended for Garfield, with neither of the other two teams ever in their games.

The team of Cheryl Breteler, Luke Monckton, Damian Brick and skip Gwen Fabris were 11 shots down before they scored. The procession just continued, ending with a 6/33 loss.

Maureen Lamport’s rink, consisting of Jan Johnson, Malcolm Newham and Bob Lamport, were on the same downward path, and lost 9/33.

Despite this devastating loss, the side remains in second place on the ladder. After a break for Melbourne Cup, the side will play host to Traralgon.

Saturday

Fortunately, the division three side rescued the club’s fortunes this week with a very good four-rink win.

Division three: Garfield defeated Moe (2) 102/52

The team of Alan Wilson, Bob Lamport, Gary Helmore and skip Stephen Whyte jumped out to a fiveshot lead early. They continued to pull away from their opponents, winning 22/12.

Tom Cleary’s team, consisting of Frank Prins, Len Preece and Joe Lenders, had a seesaw beginning with their opposition, which led to an 11-all tie after 12 ends. The home team led from there to the end, winning 21/15.

Graeme Burton, Richard Ross, Alan White and skip Shane Oliver only gave up five ends to their opponents all day, powering away to win 35/10.

The team of Les Pumphrey, Gary Payne, Steve Bassed and skip Nick Henwood started slowly, being six shots down after five ends. However, they got into gear, moving away to win 24/15. Garfield remains in second place on the ladder, just two points behind the leader Yinnar. The two will play next week.

Division five: Garfield (2) lost to Morwell Club (2) 29/96

The division five had the same problem as the Tuesday side, playing at Morwell Club on their wet grass green. The result was a complete whitewash.

The rink led by skip Gwen Fabris, with Lois King, Henry Breteler and Lexi Taylor, started well and were up 8/3 after nine ends. After that, however, the home team got going, and the Garfielders only won one more end. They finally lost 13/29.

Maureen Lamport, Margaret Hyam, Luke Monckton and skip Damian Brick were never in the game and lost 4/41.

Barrie Smith’s team, consisting of Steve Hyam, Shirley Corcoran and Brian Fox, had the same experience as Gwen’s team. They starting well, only to be caught and passed, finally losing 12/26.

This significant loss has relegated the side to last place on the ladder, with only up to go. Next week they have a home game against Morwell.
