Neerim stage fight back

Neerim District bowlers came from behind to win their home game against Newborough in division two on Saturday.

The division five team had a loss to Traralgon RSL as they struggled to come to terms with a slow grass green.

Playing at home, division six enjoyed an 18shot win over Trafalgar.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Newborough (2) 86/70

Peter Throup (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Tony Thornton and Karren Sheers went down to Spencer Goss’ team 14/17. Newborough got off to a good start and led 6/0 after three ends. Neerim closed to within one on the 10th end but Newborough pulled away again to lead by six on the 13th end. Neerim closed to within three after a series of singles but could not get any closer. Newborough won by three.

Peter Brooks (skip), Ray Watts, Ray Throup and Chris Hogan lost to Joan Goldie’s team 19/25.

Threes were common early, mainly to Newborough. Neerim fought back to trail 8/9 on the eighth end. Newborough eased ahead to lead by three on the 13th end before kicking away to a 10-shot lead on the 16th end. Neerim fought back but could only cut the margin to six at the end.

Shane Hogan (skip), Trevor Kuhnell, Ross Pollard and Richard Kerr defeated Graham Cocks’ team 25/19.

The lead fluctuated early but consecutiv­e fours gave Neerim a seven-shot lead on the eighth end. Newborough scored a five shortly after to get back in the game. Fours to both teams saw scores level at 18-all on the 15th end. Neerim won five of the last six ends to win by six shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Angus McGillivra­y, Jim Fallon and Colin McKay defeated Robbert Cook’s team 28/12.

Singles were all anyone could get early, until Newborough picked up a three on the seventh end to lead 7/2. Neerim edged back to trail by one on the 10th end before Newborough eased out again to lead 12/7 on the 14th end. Newborough did not score again with Neerim storming home with a series of multiples, including a five, to win by 16 shots.

Division five: Neerim District (2) lost to Traralgon RSL (3) 33/70

Jim Schroeder (skip), Cookie Halligan, Graeme Wingrove and Des Pelly lost to John Farqhar’s team 7/32.

Neerim got on the board on the sixth end to trail 1/7. They trailed 2/13 on the 11th end after RSL picked up ones and twos. A three on the 12th end gave Neerim a glimmer of hope, but RSL then piled on a series of multiples, including a five, as they went on to win by 25 shots.

Greg Bond (skip), Mal Collins, Gerald Winter and Bron Throup lost to Frank Metcalf’s team 10/20.

It was very low scoring early, with both teams only scoring singles and the score four-all on the eighth end. RSL won eight of the next nine ends, of which the last two were fours, to lead by 14 shots. Neerim cut four from this but RSL ran out winners by 10 shots.

John Rochford (skip), Russell Meehan, Gerry Engelstad and Mick Talbot lost to Margret Morley’s team 16/18.

Neerim were doing well from the start and led 9/6 on the seventh end. Scoring was very close from then as scores were repeatedly tied. After being level at 13-all on the 15th end, RSL eased ahead to lead by four on the penultimat­e end. A two to Neerim cut RSL’s winning margin to two.

Division six: Neerim District (3) defeated Trafalgar (4) 46/28

Roger Till (skip), Fish Halligan, Neville Cousins and Peter Nolan defeated Carolyn Fox’s team 24/10.

Neerim surged ahead from the start and led 16/5 on the 12th end thanks to a number of twos and threes. Neerim continued the pattern and led 24/7 on the 19th end. Trafalgar trimmed three from this, giving Neerim a 14shot win.

George Rymer (skip), Kay Cousins, Terry Giffin and Tom Goodwin defeated Helen Robertson’s team 22/18.

Neerim bounded away at the start, with a five on the fourth and four on the 10th end giving a 15/4 lead. Trafalgar fought back, with a four on the 17th end levelling the scores level at 17-all. Neerim held their nerve and eased ahead for a four-shot win.

Midweek

Neerim District played away against Moe on Tuesday.

Division two: Neerim District lost to Moe 43/67

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Jim Schroeder, Di Tame and Bronwyn Throup lost to Lorraine Horton’s team 13/27.

Neerim started well, winning seven of the first 10 ends to lead 10/5. Neerim still led 13/11 on the 15th end but then the wheels fell off. Moe stormed home, with a five on the last end giving them a 14-shot win.

Kay Cousins (skip), Cookie Halligan, Gerry Engelstad and Graeme Wingrove lost to Valerie Rodgers’ team 14/20.

Neerim struggled early and trailed by eight shots after 10 ends. Threes on the 16th and 17th ends had them trailing by just three shots. Moe finished off the better, winning by six.

Karren Sheers (skip), John Rochford, Thelma Schroeder and Gerald Winter lost to Valerie Griffiths’ team 16/20.

Neerim were in all sorts of trouble when they trailed 4/15 on the 10th end. The tide turned with a six and series of singles bringing Neerim to within two shots on the 17th end. Singles continued over the last four ends, but it was Moe by four shots.
