Strzelecki Bushwalking Club

-

November will be a jam-packed month with lots of varied activities on offer.

The monthly club night will be held on November 9 at the Trafalgar Scout Hall at 7.30pm. Guest speak will be Darold Klindworth who is a Canadian geologist who has lived and worked in Australia for many years. He will give an interesting presentation on local rock formations. Visitors are most welcome to attend.

On the Melbourne Club long weekend, the Club hosted an extended hike to Bogong High Plains. This was rated a walk rated “hard”. The Bogong high plains have beautiful wildflowers and unspoilt wilderness. There are 10 huts in this area, the oldest of which is Wallace’s Hut which was built in the 1830s.

The huts were originally built for use by pastoralists tending their cattle herds. These days the huts are for the use of skiers and hikers.

On November 8 the club will host a walk on the Freeman’s Mill Track. This walk will be about 14km. This track is located within the Bunyip State Forest in Gippsland. The actual Freeman’s Mill was destroyed in the “Black Sunday” bushfires of 1926 in which 60 people died and 700 were injured across the state.

On the November 13 the Club will host a “sea change” with a walk from Wonthaggi to Kilcunda. This is a popular walk and has great coastal views.

On November 19 , club members will be walking to Mt Howitt. The car park at the base of Mt Howitt is approximately 80 km from Licola and the track gives spectacular views of the Macalister River, it is well worth the journey to get there.
