Community asked to dig deep for hospital

- by Alyssa Fritzlaff

West Gippsland Healthcare Group is again asking the community to dig deep for the West Gippsland Hospital’s annual equipment appeal.

The appeal, officially launched today, aims to raise $94,173 to purchase much-needed medical equipment for the hospital and aged-care residences.

WGHG board chair Christine Holland said the annual appeal helped the hospital purchase extra medical equipment not covered by government funding.

“This year we have identified the top seven medical items needed by our patients, doctors, nurses and allied health staff,” she said.

“The equipment purchased will assist our emergency department, medical unit, consulting suites, community health, Andrews House and Cooinda Lodge Aged Care residences and our haemodialysis unit.

“We are encouraging everyone to support this year’s appeal as every donation helps.”

Kellie Chapman, of Bunyip, is among those calling for community members to donate.

Ms Chapman had to undergo emergency surgery last month after a trip to the doctor turned into something more serious.

Full of praise for the hospital staff, Ms Chapman said she was dreading having to go to hospital but it turned out to be a great experience.

“It was remarkable how fast they acted,” she said.

“I was admitted to emergency immediately and saw a doctor within half an hour.”

Soon after, Ms Chapman underwent surgery and had to spend two days recovering in hospital.

During this time, the staff were very “attentive” she said, and took the care and time to help her recover.

“They’re dealing with a large volume of people...they do need as much help as they can get.”

This year, $51,000 is being sought for a ventilator, $11,750 for a portable urine measuring system, $9000 for a mobile vital observations monitor, $7280 for a bladder scanner, $6054 for a pressure-relieving chair, $5889 for a dialysis treatment chair and $3200 for a hoist.

WGHG chief executive officer Dan Weeks said he was grateful for the ongoing support the hospital received from the community.

“We have seven key items we are hoping to raise enough money for this year. You can choose to donate any amount towards an equipment item.

“All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible, so with the end of the financial year approaching, community members and businesses may wish to contribute to our appeal.”

A flyer with a donation form attached has been released to help people make donations. The flyer will be available in the next two editions of the Warragul and Drouin Gazette.
