- The Gazette, 22 May 1923 YOUTH’S HIGH SPIRITS

Most towns have their wags, and youths, whose high spirits sometimes overflow, and find relief in practical joking. So long as no serious damage is done, it is taken all in good part; every citizen though more sedate now, realising that he was once a youth himself.

Of late some of these jokes have been indulged in Warragul and people have found strange door mats and other articles placed in their premises. One gentleman removed the brass plate from the “Gazette” office door and placed it inside, under the door. We do not know the motive for such action, but if he thought it would be safer than if left outside, it was very kind of him. He showed a fine sporting spirit, and evidently it was just a bit of fun, for the plate was not wilfully damaged or hurt in any way. The screws were getting loose, and perhaps he wished to draw attention to the fact. If so, we thank him for his consideration, and certainly appreciate the way in which he exercised in not damaging the plate, which in these times is a rather expensive item.

“AMERICAN TEA”

A very enjoyable social function “American Tea”, was given by Mr and Mrs Allen at their home, “Calembeena”, on Friday last when a large number of ladies and gentlemen spent a very pleasant time. “Bring a gift and buy a gift” was the slogan, and the proceeds go to the Queen of Friendly Societies fund on behalf of the Warragul Brass Band. Mr WE Allen gave a cordial welcome to the guests, and thanked them for their cooperation. A bounteous repast of choice refreshments added to the enjoyment of the afternoon.
