West Gippsland Seedbank

An engaging online presence is essential these days and West Gippsland Seedbank is no different.

A new website showcases what Seedbank is all about as well as providing information about the origins and purpose in an easy-touse format. Riverbank Media based in Hamilton have done a great job in producing a professional look based on information given from members.

The seed collection has finished for this season and processing has begun in earnest. All seed must be cleaned of leaf litter, prepared and packaged ready to be sent to South Gippsland Seedbank who act as a retail outlet to nurseries, Landcare projects and property owners.

Indigenous plantings are then possible throughout the shire with plants that are locally adapted to climate and soil types.

The seed is collected from various sites around Warragul and district some of which are private property with permission; many roadside reserves ; walking trails and shire owned property. This season was successful with around 60 species of plants collected even though the wetter weather in October played havoc with seed germination and altered ripening times.

Baw Baw Shire have been extremely helpful with access to local parks and reserves and re structuring at the depot in Normanby St considered our needs carefully and was a very consultative process.

All participants in the group are volunteers. Over the coming winter months we will investigate possible new collection sites.

Historical Society

On May 29, the Warragul and District Historical Society general meeting will be held at 7.30pm in the Old Shire Hall, 72 Queen Street, Warragul.

Guest speaker for the evening will be June Dineen, president of Warragul Trees. June will be telling us with the aid of a power-point of the early plantings in Warragul, how they have flourished, can they still be found and of the future.

We are always delighted to have visitors to our meetings and our last speaker, Lorraine Smith, told an amazing story titled Journey of a Lost Manuscript. Lorraine proved to be most enthusiastic and entertaining with her presentation and greatly enjoyed by all who were present.
