U3A Baw Baw Warragul Philatelic Society

-

This course is exploring the music of each decade of the late 19th and first part of the 20th centuries and links to the significant events and people of these decades. Each session gives an overview of the politics and fashions, famous people, art and literature of the decade.

Classical, pop, jazz and musical comedies of the decades are being explored. Participants are invited to “sing along” to three or four well-known songs that are relevant to the session.

There are four sessions left in this course ranging from the 1930s to the sixties. All are welcome to attend from 10am to noon on Tuesday mornings at the Drouin RSL Clubrooms, 138 Princes Way Drouin. For information ring Mary on 0499221993

Warragul Philatelic Society held its May meeting at 7:30pm in the Warragul Community House, during which the arrangements for the annual Stamp and Coin Fair at the Exhibition Hall, starting at 10am on Saturday, June 3 were finalised.

Strong support from both stamp and coin dealers, as well as dealers in swap cards, postcards and ephemera has meant that all available tables have been taken up, which is very pleasing.

Some members brought along some items of philatelic interest for others to look at, including a piece with one stamp from Italy and one from the Czech Republic, cancelled in Italy.

Each month members are asked to bring along a philatelic or other item starting with a particular letter. The letter for May was “g”, so Stan brought along a gift of a Maltese miniature sheet for the new members, Brian B brought along his Guernsey collection, Nick wore green, Sue brought along some German colonial currency, John brought along a GB stamp catalogue, Brian M brought some group stamps, Alan brought some examples of stamps showing golf and goldfish, while Jeanette brought some ginger puffs and Debbie brought some Grainwaves.

The one to three page competition was on “trains”. Jeanette’s entry was 1st, an anonymous entry was 2nd, while Brian M came 3rd with his display of Australian trains.

Next meeting will be on Monday, June 19 at 7:30pm at the Warragul Community House in Normanby St. There is no competition for this month, nor for July, but the letter for June is “h” and for July is “I”.

There will be an afternoon meeting on Saturday, July 1y, at 1pm in the Warragul Community House, at which Graham McKenzie will be guest speaker. Afternoon tea will be provided.

The annual general meeting will be on Monday, July 17 at 7:30pm in the Warragul Community House. As is the case with all meetings, new members are welcome.

Any queries, contact Jeanette on 56221514. We hope to see everyone at the Warragul Stamp and Coin Fair on Saturday, 3rd June at the Exhibition Hall in Warragul.
