EMPIRE DAY AT BULN BULN

-

Empire Day was celebrated in a very fitting manner at Buln Buln and altogether the weather conditions were rather unfavourable, the large class room was full of children, parents and visitors. The staff and committee took advantage of the occasion to unveil the honour books and have the A.N.A. prize (for best kept school garden) present Mr M. Butler presided.

The honour roll was unveiled by Sir John Mackey, who, in an excellent speech, which was very inspiring and educational, first referred to the birth and growth of the school, paying a tribute to Mr McPhee (first head teacher), who laid out the garden and grounds; afterwards in general terms with dealt with the splendid work done by the Australian soldiers, in which the boys whose names and photos appeared in the honour books did their share. Sir John also paid a pleasing tribute to the present head teacher, Mr Hiatt, for the excellent condition of the school and behaviour of the scholars.

Cr Oliver, who presented the A.N.A. prize on behalf of the Warragul branch in a very neat speech expressed his pleasure at being present, and congratulated the people of Buln Buln on their possession of such a fine school and grounds.

The prize was received by Mr Hiatt, who thanked the donors of the gift. Vocal items by the school were nicely rendered.

A vote of thanks was proposed by the correspondent, Mr JW Hawkins, and excellent afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, for which the committee and staff express their thanks and appreciation.
