Kicking comes back to haunt Gulls

-

Warragul's fourths were made to pay for some inaccurate kicking against Wonthaggi.

The undermanned Gulls began their match strongly enough, leading at half time before falling away to lose 3.11 (29) to 7.9 (51).

The last quarter in particular saw them boot 0.5 to miss out on any chance of retaking the lead, as the Power booted five goals to none in the second half.

Wonthaggi youngster Jaxon Brouwers proved the difference, kicking five goals to lead his side to victory.

Tyson O'Leary continued his strong year for Warragul, as did Caleb McIntosh and Xavier Olsson, but with just 18 players available it was always going to be a challenge for the Gulls.

Drouin's fourths similarly ran out of petrol tickets, losing out on a golden opportunity against Maffra.

The Hawks absolutely took it up to the second-placed Eagles early, keeping them scoreless for the entire first quarter.

They managed to hold a slim lead going into half time and three quarter time, before the floodgates opened in the final term as Maffra kicked five goals to one to consign Drouin to a 7.5 (47) to 10.8 (68) defeat.

They'll take plenty out of their first three quarters, but will undoubtedly be disappointed to have been overrun in the last.

Tyler Harkin kicked three goals for the Hawks, while Blake Bibby, Samuel Grundy, Ewan Croucher and Kai McLeish were among their best.

In other fourths results Moe overcame Leongatha 7.8 (50) to 5.10 (40), Sale defeated Morwell 13.6 (84) to 7.6 (48) and Traralgon continued their unbeaten streak against Bairnsdale 14.9 (93) to 5.6 (36).

Drouin's thirds had a match to forget against Maffra.

The Hawks were outmatched and outgunned from the first bounce, conceding five goals in the first quarter while scoring none themselves.

The margin only increased in every quarter, though an improved defensive effort in the second quarter left the final score at 2.8 (20) to 14.6 (90).

Vice captain Brock Walsh was Drouin's best, while Cameron Caddy and Will Bethune were also solid.

In other thirds results Sale beat Morwell 11.11 (77) to 8.6 (54), Traralgon thumped Bairnsdale 15.6 (96) to 5.7 (37), Leongatha thrashed Moe 10.10 (70) to 1.5 (11) and Warragul had the bye.

Drouin's reserves side went scoreless for the entire day against Maffra.

The Hawks were unable to get the ball through the sticks at any stage of their 0.0 (0) to 17.10 (112) loss.

The few shots they were able to generate either fell short or went wide.

In saying that, they were able to show a much better defensive effort in the second half, conceding just two goals after letting through 15 in the first half.

Charlie Bethune was best on the Hawks after losing his spot in the senior side, while Jack Fraser was similarly solid.

Warragul's reserves didn't fare much better as they suffered a heavy loss to Wonthaggi.

The Gulls were heavily undermanned, especially given the length of the senior side's injury list, and were nowhere near the level of their opponents, losing 2.1 (13) to 21.19 (145).

By half time the scoreboard read 64 to zero; both of the Gulls' goals coming in the second half.

Jacob Orlicki, Xavier La Frantz and Daniel Saker were among Warragul's better players.

Elsewhere in the reserves, Traralgon handled Bairnsdale 9.7 (61) to 7.4 (46), Sale defeated Morwell 11.14 (80) to 7.2 (44) and Leongatha battered Moe 11.14 (80) to 2.1 (13).
