Hawks show improvement

- by Alyssa Fritzlaff

The Drouin Hawks women's team demonstrated growth at the Female Football Gippsland Gather Round on Sunday.

Playing Boisdale/Briagalong at the Morwell Recreation Reserve, the team improved on their last score, losing 1.2 (8) to 8.10 (58).

The last time the Hawks faced up against Boisdale/Briagalong they lost 113 to 2.

The Hawks started with the windy conditions on their side, scoring one goal in the first quarter and keeping Boisdale to just one goal and one point.

In the second quarter, however, Boisdale leapt ahead by four goals and two points, despite the best efforts of the Hawks backline.

The Hawks continued to work hard against the skilled Boisdale and demonstrated their improvement through new passages of play.

Despite the Hawks' tight defensive work, Boisdale's moves were too smooth and they took off a few times - landing contested marks close to the posts. In the final quarter, the Hawks managed to hit the scoreboard one last time, scoring a behind.

The Hawks' best on field were Cait van Dord, Leesa Gustella, Jordi Gillat, Josi MacDonald, Amy Heath, and Jade Snelling.

van Dord's ruck work was impressive, was her work in the midfield. She consistently won contests throughout the match. Guastella played a terrific game, and took off with the ball several times, successfully moving the ball into the forward 50, and scoring the team's only goal. Gillat played hard and fast, successfully putting her body on the line to clear the ball, while Josi MacDonald (from the Hawks Youth team) was a standout with disposals and endurance. Heath was a voice for the team and could be heard throughout the match, while Snelling played another excellent game, giving each quarter her all.

In round seven, on Sunday June 18, the Hawks will play Boisdale/Briagalong again at Boisdale Recreation Reserve.
