Blues secure second win

- by Davyd Reid

CATANI have denied Nyora its opportunity to advance up the ladder, with a run of seven consecutive goals helping the Blues record their second win of the season.

Following a competitive first term, the Blues went on a charge to set up a 13-14 (92) to 9-4 (58) victory.

The Blues were boosted by the inclusion of Matt Souter-Smith from Springvale, while Nick Anderson and Josh Ryan were big outs for Nyora.

Despite this it would be Nyora to open the scoring, Jordan Anderson finding Scott Pugh on the lead for a conversion from 40 metres boundary side from the opening play of the day.

Michael Ralph found space from a ruck tap as the Blues had the immediate response.

Jack Rosenow troubled the Blues at times with his run, with his hard work from the wing putting the Saints back in front.

Souter-Smith drifted forward to convert for Catani, before Trent Breen made up for a missed check side with a long goal to see another lead change.

The Blues began their run in the second term, Cunningham throwing the ball on his boot from a boundary throw in for the first of his four majors.

Wade Haysom converted from 30 metres to break a mini stalemate, the Blues making it three in a row soon after.

Cunningham snapped another before Lauchlan Gregson put through a check side to increase the margin to 31 at the long break.

A strong mark from Tyson Robinson set up Adam Splatt for the Blues' eighth, before Haysom added another to make it seven on the bounce.

Dylan Heylen stopped the rot for the Saints, scoring a miraculous goal from the pocket.

Not to be perturbed, the Blues worked hard forward again with Cunningham the beneficiary from a toe poke in the goal square.

The Blues went end to end to see Cody Banbury on the end of it, before Jono Hewitt caused some confusion among the Blues defence to set up Brandon Lloyd.

It sparked something in the Saints, as the final term began in frantic fashion. Heylen, Travis Stewart, Rosenow, Finlay Cousins, Angus Mcgillivray and Samuel Dixon were among the players keen to see the Saints show something.

Thomas Robinson, Callum May, Cody Fleming, Tyson Robinson and Thomas Keily had helped the Blues to a winning position.

With the Blues looking to take some time off the clock, the Saints would capitalise with the next goal.

Cunningham would ultimately seal it with his fourth, before Heylen added a further two consolation goals for the Saints.
