Impressive Hawks fall short

-

Fourth placed Drouin fell three goals short of second placed Moe in A grade on Saturday.

A grade: Drouin 49 lost to Moe 52

This was a fast, clean and highly contested game of netball.

Drouin played with intensity, a high work rate and commitment to the plan. The sidelines were packed and the crowds watching this epic game.

Circle defenders Kym Diston and Lucy McKellar have been building on their connection each week. This week, they took it to another level.

The aim to keep Moe scoring under 60 points was well and truly achieved.

In attack, the girls played smart, structured netball, using speed and agility to get the ball to circle edge and create opportunities at the post.

Converting turnovers in critical moments will enable the Hawks to get the win next time against Moe.

Awards: Lucy McKellar and Kym Diston.

B grade: Drouin 65 defeated Moe 51

This was a huge win for the Hawks who now take third position on the ladder.

Consistency in implementing the game plan and the use of the rolling subs to inject pace and fresh legs were crucial parts to the win.

Ruby Pratt and Kylie Proctor showed great leadership and maturity for the entire match; whilst Deb Thomas was bloodied but composed and fed the ball beautifully into Brooke DeRiter.

It was a huge team effort and amazing to watch.

C grade: Drouin 38 defeated Moe 23

It was a must-win match for the Hawks to maintain a good ladder position.

The first half started slow, with multiple changes and plays to find some rhythm on court.

But, once it started, it was gold and only a matter of increasing the lead.

Moe’s strong zone defence showed no challenge to Kate Butler in centre, who used her speed and experience to drive hard and feed into the ring.

Jess Murray took a break from centre - after Kelly McMillan got acquainted with the court’s ground and showed she still has some great moves in goal defence. She took intercepts all over the court, which was integral to the lead at the end.

Awards: Jess Murray and Kate Butler.

17 and under: Drouin 44 defeated Moe 13

The Hawks 17s are back on the winners’ list!

After some hard fought weeks, the girls put in an amazing performance to come away with the four points.

Jasmine Norton and Lainey Downey were impressive in the defence end, creating lots of turnovers and opportunities for the attackers.

Tilly Carroll was strong through the midcourt, linking the ball well into the Nalder sisters - Kaylee and Fiona.

It was a great game to watch and the girls will continue to build from here.

15 and under: Drouin 19 lost to Moe 26

This was a great game to watch, with only one point separating the teams for most of the match.

In the dying minutes, the Hawks just needed to keep some composure. It was hard to take your eyes of Leilani “Lulu” Lightowler who got hands to the ball all over the court as goal defence. She worked in perfect sync with Mylie Stoll in goal keeper.

Fiona Nalder was again a workhorse in goal attack. Her work on the centre passes, along with Emmy Kneebone, was speedy yet controlled. This gave the team a lot of options bringing it back.

Awards: Leilani Lightowler and Fiona Nalder.

13 and under: Drouin 28 lost to Moe 37

The Hawks knew they had a tough game ahead and came out firing.

Moe led the whole game, but the Hawks worked tirelessly for all four quarters and were able to get within six in the last.

Sophie Maloney was excellent in goal keeper, creating many turnovers. Makaylah Monckton in wing defence applied constant pressure, forcing the Lions to turn the ball over.
