Great start for Gulls

Warragul had two senior wins and junior improvemen­t when hosting Wonthaggi on Saturday.

A grade: Warragul 58 defeated Wonthaggi 36

The Gulls had a great start, quickly getting in front and leading 13-6 at quarter time.

The defensive pressure all over the court created opportunit­ies for the Warragul girls to capitalise on.

The addition of Emma Ryde and Becky Dixon in goals saw the team grow in confidence, resulting in conversion­s off turnovers.

Awards: Ella Rees, Sienna Green and Jaime Rollinson.

B grade: Warragul 45 defeated Wonthaggi 38

The Gulls had an exciting start to the season, recording a first home win.

This was a very close game throughout, with the Gulls running away in the last quarter for a seven-goal win.

Mackenzie Minichiell­o shined throughout, with a killer game in the defence and leading the ball down the court.

With many changes throughout the midcourt, the girls worked seamlessly together. In particular, Ashlyn Gallasch and Brooke Cahill showed consistenc­y all game.

C grade: Warragul 20 lost to Wonthaggi 33

In trying conditions and some tough oneon-one pressure, the Warragul girls were great in the first half.

The defensive pressure all over the court particular­ly by Cara Gavin and Charli Hendrikse - was great to watch.

Injuries were suffered late and the club wish Charli and Ash Paul speedy recoveries.

Awards: Charli Hendrikse, Mia Lieshout and Cara Gavin.

17 and under: Warragul 16 lost to Wonthaggi 34

The Gulls were defeated in a very good display of netball from both sides, but didn’t give up.

This team features some girls who are new the club and others who haven’t played together before this year. As the girls develop with their netball, the wins will come.

Awards: Charlotte Long, Edie Flanagan and Brooke Cahill.

15 and under: Warragul 25 lost to Wonthaggi 43

The Gulls displayed a great first game. It was good to see the team all play together for the first time, and it looks like an exciting season ahead.

Best on court was Audrey Simpson for continued attacking pressure and work in goals.

Ryler Piner was also awarded for her midcourt efforts, while Addison Heenan showed her versatilit­y in both goals and defence.

13 and under: Warragul 15 lost to Wonthaggi 27

Under new coach Chloe Ross, the girls showcased exceptiona­l potential.

The team welcomed five new player, three with family connection­s to the club.

Alyssa Sheehan, daughter of BJ Sheehan, was an absolute standout in defence, receiving an award. Tilly Hodge, daughter of Daniel Hodge, showed incredible determinat­ion and speed. Evelyn Blackwood, daughter of Adam Blackwood, is a little midcourt pocket rocket. Indi Kelton and Josie Malady also played their first games, showing excellent defence skills.

Charli Hodge returned as a standout goaler, earning her the best on court award.

The dedication of returning players Billie Gray, Indi Olson (vice-captain) and Bella Senini (captain) was evident in their improved skills. Overall, it was an encouragin­g start to the season.
