Bunyip annihilated

-

Bunyip's on-field prospects sunk to a new low on Saturday as they were utterly annihilated by a rampant Nar Nar Goon.

The signs of life the Bulldogs showed in their opening round loss to Garfield was nowhere to be seen against the Goon as they failed to kick a goal in the 0.3 (3) to 40.22 (262) loss.

The defeat was by far the largest the Bulldogs have suffered since their pre-2023 senior exodus, easily eclipsing their 199-point loss to Phillip Island in round six last year.

Goon forward Dermott Yawney enjoyed a day out with 10 goals to be his side's best player, along with Matthew Gentile (six goals), Ryan Bromley and Jed Smith also running rampant.

Injuries have already taken their toll on Bunyip, with key players like Seth Ashton, Sam McMillan and Lachlan Petch out for solid periods of time and others dropping like flies during Saturday's match.

Other sides could afford losses like that. Bunyip can't.

As has been the case in most of Bunyip's significant losses the home side were jumped from the outside, conceding nine goals in the first quarter alone.

By half time the margin had ballooned to beyond triple digits and if the Bulldogs were hoping for some respite past that, the Goon had other ideas.

Twelve third quarter Goon goals put them more than 200 points up as their ruthlessness showed exactly what their intent is in season 2024.

Nar Nar Goon were outstanding in their thumping win over Phillip Island last week and while a competitive game was always going to be hard to see here, the magnitude of their victory would have the competition noticing.

These teams appear destined to finish on opposite ends of the ladder and the final result reflected as much.

The debut of Ronan McNamara, a fifth generation Bulldogs player, was nice to see, but that Carlton Draft player can't come quickly enough for the Bunyip.

Timothy Henschel, Jason Williams and Darby Craven were their best on a dark day in the club's history.
