REGENERATIVE AND QUIET LUXURY FOR A/W 2025
Orta puts design first whilst focusing on new technology, customer demand, and circularity
WeAr Denim interviewed new Sales, Marketing and Product Development Director of ORTA, Oktay Okuroğlu, to learn about his vision for the future of the historic company.
What is the centerpiece of Orta's new A/W 2025 collection?
We will continue our regenerative and longevity mindset with regenerative materials and circularity. The collection will be based on three core concepts; the quiet luxury family, as a continuation of the S/S 2025 collection, engineered with Orta’s soft and luxe constructions coupled with eco-conscious finishes. This will include a knitted denim family. The second group will be about 70s-inspired premium finishes with soft fibers. Authentic stretches fabrics will dominate this group. Our natural comfort family will be featured here, too. The last group will focus on black.
Orta's brand DNA is structured along very clean lines. Our partners, designers, and buyers created emotional bonds with this inherited look, which we do not intend to break, but to make stronger.
How will you ensure that both quality and sustainability standards are being fulfilled?
For us, the fabric needs to look good first and foremost! Denim needs to be durable by nature, and to achieve this you have to construct good quality denim, both emotionally and physically. Furthermore, the fabric should be manufactured via regenerative materials and technologies that reduce its environmental impact. And, finally, the fabric must be designed with circular principles in mind, contain recycled fibers, or be recyclable back into the system.
We have developed a standard called GOLDEN RATIO, a mix of pre- and post-consumer recycled materials, combined with alternative natural fibers to give the look and feel that our denim needs to have, without compromising on the quality. Using recycled materials is always a challenge in a fabric, due to technical constraints such as increased energy consumption, waste generation, lower performance, and more generation of second quality fabrics. GOLDEN RATIO's mindset helps to overcome all these challenges and achieves durable recycled fabrics.
Are there any recent innovations in technologies or fibers you would like to mention?
We have created the NATURAL COMFORT concept, with a holistic approach to fabric development. With the increasing textile waste problem and microplastic pollution, the end consumer is looking for products based on natural solutions that offer a certain level of comfort. NATURAL COMFORT fabrics are made from 100% cotton with no petroleum-based fibers, but still offer a comfort level of almost 20% elasticity. This fabric also allows garments to be mechanically recycled back to fibers.
Color in denim is a trend that seems to be making a comeback. Could you share a few insights about color within Orta?
We have developed fabrics with dyestuffs made from agricultural waste, clay coated fabrics, and mineral waste-based dyestuff. For indigo dyeing, our main color, we have natural indigo fabrics and a sustainable dyeing technology called INDIGO FLOW, with water savings of up to 70% and cleaner wastewater from dyeing. We can also use it for black denim.
