Timeless appeal at the top

This spectacular sub-penthouse is the result of a lofty ambition to transform an original apartment into a breathtaking abode with views to match

- WORDS ANNA RAWLINGS

COMPLETELY stripping back a subpenthouse 37 floors high, before sleekly refurbishing it into a luxury abode, is no easy feat.

But it’s what vendor David Evans has achieved inside this sprawling home in the sky.

“I bought it in 2015 when it was totally original, it would have been about 25-yearsold then, and I demolished it right back,” Mr Evans said.

“I think it’s quite spectacular compared to what it was before.”

The financial services businessman said he was first drawn to the apartment by its balconies and he made sure to capitalise on the uninterrupted 270 degree views of the ocean, city skyline, Broadwater, Hinterland and beyond.

The apartment occupies over half of the 37th floor in the residential-only Grand Mariner building.

“All of the other ocean-facing apartments don’t have balconies, but this one has 90 metres of terraces,” Mr Evans said.

“So I opened up the living spaces during the renovation to use the terraces more and that is definitely by far and away the standout feature.”

The two living and two dining areas open out onto the wraparound entertaining terraces, and are cleverly positioned to separate the master suite from the other two bedrooms for complete privacy.

Featuring white marble, glass and timberlook finishes, the interior is opulent at every turn from the limestone-finished master ensuite to the gourmet kitchen with marble island bench, and freestanding 600-bottle wine cellar.

Each room features varying textures and palettes, from the plush grey carpeted master bedroom with white-panelled ceilings, to the dark shades of the designer cabinets in the home office.

The result is free-flowing living to suit all tastes.

“I wanted it to be timeless, we lifted all the ceilings which was a big job to do in an apartment building, just to really bring the ocean and skyline views inside more,” Mr Evans said.

“I worked on it for about a year, I thought about the design carefully.”

Having just finished his project, Mr Evans has now set his sights on another property.

“I have done these sorts of renovations before, I did one at Budds Beach but nothing to this level,” he said.

“But it really is too big, I am downsizing into something smaller.”

The sub-penthouse comes with two sideby-side car spaces, and residents at Grand Mariner can enjoy use of the indoor and outdoor pools, spa and steam room, tennis courts, marina and golf hit-up areas.
