Charming cottage recreated

Modern design meets old-world charm in this cozy mountain cottage, which has been restored to its former glory

- WORDS JESSICA BROWN

IT’S the kind of quaint cottage that will leave you longing to curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book or sip tea in the sun room while admiring the lush gardens.

The Tamborine Mountain character home radiates heart and soul, from its coffered ceilings and VJ walls to multi-panel windows and feature stone fireplace.

Its homely presence welcomes all with open doors but be warned – once you’re inside, you’ll never want to leave.

Modern Cape Cod and Hamptons influences have been seamlessly blended with old-world charm to revitalise the 1924 homestead on Park Lane.

Owners Mike and Jaime Hurley spent years perfecting the look, which has proved worthwhile.

“We bought the property in 2015 and started renovating prior to moving in,” Mrs Hurley said.

“It was more about restoring it to its former glory.”

While the couple led the charge, a team of designers and builders helped bring their plans to life.

Mrs Hurley said major renovations finally wrapped up at the end of last year.

The property has six bedrooms and four bathrooms, including those in a selfcontained caretaker’s cottage.

An open kitchen, living and dining area is at the heart of the home with the feature stone fireplace serving as a centrepiece.

There are two bedrooms on the first floor, including the main, both of which have ensuites and built-in wardrobes.

A nursery and breakfast nook flanked by multi-panel windows round out the first floor’s offerings.

A covered veranda with integrated barbecue kitchen and pizza oven, sun deck and terrace with a heated pool wrap around the house, offering plenty of space to entertain guests.

Downstairs, two additional bedrooms share a bathroom as well as a study and living area.

The acreage estate also has a Balinese hut, pond with waterfall, a fruit orchid and vegetable garden.

Mrs Hurley loved the home’s mixture of old and new features.

“Of the original spaces, there’s a little sun room that’s just beautiful to sit in and look out over the gardens,” she said.

“Of the new additions, I think the kitchen is a beautiful space.”

While the Hurleys have enjoyed calling the property home, they are moving onto a new project.

“We’re staying on the mountain – we love the mountain – we’re just looking at a little bit more of a horse property,” she said.

The residence is being marketed by Harcourts Coastal agent Katrina Walsh.

It is scheduled to go under the hammer on November 27.
