Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin - Property

Worth a quick trip

Imagine wanting a property so much you were willing to fly interstate for a day to secure it

- WORDS JESSICA BROWN

AN interstate buyer was so determined to own a rundown Burleigh Heads beach house that he flew into the Gold Coast for the day to attend the property’s auction.

The South Australian buyer splashed $1.015 million on the Deodar Drive residence, which was listed in January for the first time in more than 45 years.

Selling agent Troy Fitzgerald, of Ray White Broadbeach, said his decision to attend was made at the eleventh hour. “He registered to bid, had someone bidding on his behalf then changed his mind on the morning of the auction and flew up,” he said.

“He signed a contract and was on a flight back home (that) afternoon.”

“I have a feeling he will end up knocking it down because it’s him, his wife and his friend from Perth (who bought it).”

Mr Fitzgerald said the South Australian buyer made it clear before the auction he was determined to own the property.

“I’d had one conversation with him and he wanted it, he wasn’t letting go,” he said.

He wasn’t the only one who desperately wanted the property, with more than 100 people attending the auction.

“There were 13 registered bidders and the crowd was huge, about 150 people were there including heaps of locals,” he said.

“The street was packed with people out on the road and it was a fun auction with plenty of laughs.” He said prospective buyers were attracted to the 536sq m property’s location, which was close to popular cafes and restaurants as well as the beach, and its medium density zoning.

“That little pocket in Burleigh is going absolutely berserk at the moment,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

A mix of developers hoping to transform the site and house hunters keen to build their dream homes were keen on the property.
