Six steps to dress for work success
SHOPPING centre retail stylist Raquel Ryan shares her tips for dressing for an internship, interview or job.
1 DO NOT FORCE IT
“Being comfortable in what you are wearing is key,” Ryan says. “If you are comfortable, you will feel confident in any work environment.
“There is nothing worse than attending a meeting and being too hot or concerned that what you are wearing does not fit accordingly. For girls, a dress is a great last-minute option as it is only one item to worry about. Just ensure it isn’t too short or low-cut.”
2 BLAZE AWAY
“Not only a key wardrobe staple, a blazer instantly smartens up an outfit,” she says.
“Keep one, preferably black, in your office for any impromptu meetings or presentation. If you work in a slightly more casual environment, a tailored leather jacket also looks great.”
3 OVERDRESS
“If you are unsure how to dress for a work situation, overdress,” Ryan says.
“It is better to be too dressy and professional than too casual in a work environment.
“Wearing layers also allows you to adjust to spontaneous meetings or situations.”
4 KEEP COLOURS SIMPLE
“Having key wardrobe staples in shades of black, grey and white allows you to mix up your outfits and swap key seasonal trend pieces seamlessly,” Ryan says.
5 FIND THE RIGHT FIT
“Have options when it comes to shoes,” she says.
“While a heel or a point makes a powerful statement, if you need to walk long distances in discomfort, it is not worth it. Shop for shoes that are comfortable but still professional.
“It’s a good idea to keep a pair of flats in your drawer in case you need to walk long distances.”
6 BAG IT
“A big, simple bag is key for work,” she says.
“Choose something you can easily throw a notepad, laptop or iPad in for meetings. Black goes with everything.”
