Multiple motivation for Demons
SURFERS Paradise hope to use the 25th anniversary of a premiership double and the 100th milestone of one of their current crop to lift their QAFL side to victory today.
The Demons are looking to build on their own achievements by securing a critical Round 10 win over Wilston Grange at Sir Bruce Small Park, Surfers Paradise.
Coach Peter Young said the anniversary of the club’s senior and reserves titles in 1990, and Regan Finlay’s 100th game for the club was the perfect platform to edge the sixth-placed team closer to a finals berth.
“The club is in a good place and starting to be really competitive,” he said.
“We have lost three games by 11 points total so if we can finish off games it will hold us in good stead.”
It is Young’s first year at the helm of the team and he is starting to reap the rewards from his strategy to blood 47 of his list of 60 players so far this year. “We are giving blokes an opportunity and that’s what it is about,” he said.
“We are giving them an opportunity to see who wants to play in the strongest competition in Queensland. We haven’t got a lot of finances and instead of just buying players we want to educate them”
Surfers Paradise lost to Wilston Grange by 10 points in Round 1 and Young said the realistic chance of making the finals was motivating the squad.
Wilston Grange hold fourth spot, three wins away from Surfers Paradise.
Labrador will aim to keep their undefeated record intact when they travel to play Sandgate today while Broadbeach take on Palm Beach Currumbin tomorrow at home.
