BRING ’EM ON
THE co-owner of one of the newest additions to the Glitter Strip night-life scene says he welcomes more venues.
Sacha Kanaghines opened his American-style BBQ and boutique beer venue House of Brews in Surfers Paradise in June, aiming it at the 25-plus crowd.
Sacha, who has Nonna’s restaurant at Harbour Town and started House of Brews with his brothers, says he isn’t worried by new late-night live music bar 19 Orchid Avenue next door even though it’s also pitched at those aged 25 and over.
“I think it is fantastic. That place is more 10pm to 5am whereas we are done by midnight. I hope they bring a good crowd in. The more, the merrier.
“If he goes really well there I will be absolutely thrilled for him. It will mean more people on the street and bring the crowds in.
“I would like a half-dozen more venues to start up.”
House of Brews and 19 Orchid Avenue Bespoke Tailor, scheduled to open next week, are the latest in a series of new food and nightlife ventures to start in Surfers Paradise including Brooklyn Depot, popular for its gourmet burgers.
Other recent additions include nightspot Club Boutique, by the owners of Love in Broadbeach, and Platinum owner Joey Lamattina’s Cocoon UltraLounge.
Sacha says despite all the new arrivals he believes anything different to the mainstream nightclubs will do well.
“I think people are just hanging out for something different,” he tells Coast Weekend.
“Brooklyn Depot has proved it, we are proving it slowly, Longboards is proving it.
“Our crowd want to come in and listen to a bit of live music or rock music, have a few beers and a burger and they’re on their way.”
But Sacha believes the Gold Coast still has a long way to go to improve the span of its night-life offering.
“I don’t think we are even close to offering what we could be,” he says.
“There is so much same old, same old out there and not enough variety and genres that are even being touched.”
