Season on line as cautious Bears tackle Seagulls’ big pack

- CONNOR O’BRIEN GOLD COAST TWEED LEAGUE

THEY contested one of the season’s most thrilling games, now Burleigh and Runaway Bay will square off in an effort to keep their respective campaigns alive.

A month ago, the Bears looked down and out trailing 30-10 at Bycroft Oval, only to mount a stunning late charge to win 36-30.

This afternoon at Pizzey Park, it’s do-or-die.

Reigning premiers Burleigh welcome back Parahi Wilson but have lost hooker Tom Rowles and fullback Tyler Chadburn to season-ending injuries.

Nonetheless, coach Matt Foster said their spine remained strong in the form of Sam Grant, Dan Schwass, Jacob Grant and Chris Law.

“These guys have been working together a fair bit this year and they have all played with each other in those positions,” Foster said.

The Seagulls have struggled for consistency but coach Clinton Toopi, who will start in the second-row, said they took confidence from the way they got into a winning position when the sides last met.

“It just sort of helps us in our confidence in our prep going into it thinking we can match it if we’re on,” he said.

Toopi said props Gene Ropoama and Doryaan Hape Apiata will be central to their hopes, along with halves Falani Arkell and Shaun Nipperess – who has stepped up in place of injured No.7 Conner Toia.

Foster said Burleigh would be wary of Bay’s big boppers including Ropoama but warned their opponent’s strength lies with no single name.

“Probably the strongest element with them is they are a very close unit,” he said.

“They never give up, they never know when they are beaten in a game and they’ll push you right to the end and that’s dangerous.”

Tugun host Southport in tomorrow’s qualifying final. The winner will take on minor premiers Tweed Heads next weekend for the chance to book a place in the decider.

Currumbin’s forfeit last round came at an ideal time for the refreshed Seahawks, who will be close to full strength and are looking to capitalise on their vast experience.

“We won both the games (against them in the regular season) but anything can happen in finals footy,” said coach Martin Griese.

“We have got a good game plan so I think we will be fine.”

The Tigers head south on the back of a three-match winning streak which had them within a whisker of claiming home ground advantage.
