Gym targeted for attack shares building with kids’ swimming school
A GYM member says it is a concern that the business was targeted in a shooting, given it shares the building with a children’s swimming school.
Police are investigating the attack on the 24-hour Jetts Gym in Maudsland earlier this week.
The damage to a window is believed to have been done on Wednesday night or Thursday morning but police did not reveal the incident until questioned by the Bulletin yesterday morning – about 36 hours later.
A member of the gym said the incident was worrying.
“Apparently someone swiped in (to the gym) at around 12. Then there was a shot through the front window,” he said.
“Police were there on Thursday morning and found a slug inside. They are investigating the guy who swiped in.”
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers were investigating whether the incident was linked to three others on the Gold Coast (see report on page 2) .
“Police are investigating reports of a bullet hole and reports a round was found inside,” the spokesman said.
“We’re trying to establish whether (the shootings) are linked. (The superintendent) has established that it’s in the right time and the right place (to be connected).”
Superintendent Craig Hanlon said police had not established a link between 24-hour gyms and criminal activity but said offenders committed crimes whenever and wherever opportunities presented themselves.
“If people want to undertake criminal activity, they’re going to undertake it in places where there are less people and they’ve got more opportunities to do it,” he said.
