Nipper spots a chance to follow dad

- SHAYA LAUGHLIN

YOU won’t find Harvey Wotherspoon’s hero in comic books, because he is at the beach.

The six-year-old wants to become a lifeguard when he grows up, just like his dad, Paul Wotherspoon.

“You get to save people and go over waves,” Harvey said, looking up to his father.

“I love to go in the water, especially ducking under waves.”

Harvey will sign up for his second nipper season tomorrow at BMD Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club.

Mr Wotherspoon, 38, said he had been part of the club since he was five.

“All my groomsmen at my wedding were clubbies,” he said.

“I started as a kid and I’ve never left. This is my eighth year working as a lifeguard.”

Harvey will be among more than 4000 nippers to sign up at Gold Coast clubs from Southport to Burleigh Heads.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Gold Coast regional manager Lachlan Sherrington said they were hoping for record numbers.

Children aged from five to 13 can join.
