NOW that the dust has settled on the 2016 Rio Olympics there is one amazing thing that the Australian public seems to be unaware or ignorant of and that is in regard to the men’s 1500m track event.

The winner of the 1500m men’s track event Matthew Centrowitz, of US, won in a time of 3min 50sec.

However Australia’s “Usain Bolt” of middle distance running Herb Elliott won gold in Rome in 1960 with a time of 3min 35.6sec – a world record.

If Herb Elliott had run in Rio he would have won there by at least an incredible 60m.

To be so superior to presentday athletes 56 years ago must put Elliott in a league all of his own.

In his career he was never defeated over 1500m or one mile and the Australian held world records for several years over both those distances. JOHN PARSONS, CANUNGRA

DURING Road Safety Week I have been overwhelmed by lack of follow-up media by our Government on the initial launch on TV.

Seems we need a new approach to the use of media as a means of bringing home our need to slow down. How about this as a proactive approach to road safety?

Recently while on a trip to South Australia I noted the daily practice aimed at slowing down their motorists.

Each day the speed camera’s locations and sites are shown, using just the road name, not the exact location, nor time, in the daily newspaper.

In view of our increasing road toll I suggested this to our Government, who responded stating the locations are already shown on their website and are available anytime for public view.

I went to the site and found it lists some 3700 locations, which to my mind defeats the purpose of the daily notices and is impractical as a deterrent.

Given most injury accidents are due to speed, inattention and inex- perience, maybe our Government should reconsider my suggestion and start publishing the road locations to get us all to slow down. GARRY KRISCHOCK, RUNAWAY BAY

READERS of the Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday might have thought the morning paper had gone to the dogs but any such suggestion was certainly barking up the wrong tree ( All about the ruff stuff, it’s Dog Day, 26/08).

What a wonderful gallery of canine pets.

Alertness, intelligence, loyalty and mischief are just some of the traits portrayed in this line-up.

If these pictures don’t get prospective dog owners’ tails wagging I don’t know what would.

Gee, life’s ruff for some! KEN JOHNSTON, ROCHEDALE SOUTH
