Signs looking good in health
ABOUT 45,000 extra healthcare and social assistance workers are forecast to be needed in Queensland in the five years to November 2020, with nurses in particularly strong demand.
Employment Department projections show, across Australia, 51,400 more registered nurses are expected in that period.
University of Southern Queensland vice-chancellor and president Professor Jan Thomas says her university offers a broad range of health-related courses, both oncampus at USQ Ipswich and via distance education.
These include paramedicine, nursing, sport and exercise, human services, psychology and a graduate-entry Bachelor of Midwifery.
“USQ Ipswich has expanded its program offering to ensure our degrees are industry-relevant and provide learning opportunities that bridge the gap between tertiary studies and the workforce,” Prof Thomas says.
For student Benjamin McCrindle (pictured), nursing was not his first choice but turned out to be his best.
He initially pursued a career in paramedicine as he wanted to care for others and make a difference in people’s lives.
But after studying at a different university and working as a para- medic for a private company, he realised it wasn’t the career path for him.
“Paramedicine is an exciting and important area of healthcare but I was more interested in diagnostics and long-term supportive interventions,” Mr McCrindle says.
“So I applied to study nursing at the University of Southern Queensland and it was the wisest decision I have ever made.”
Mr McCrindle, from Ebbw Vale, is in his third year of a Bachelor of Nursing at USQ Ipswich with dreams of working in rural aeromedical medicine and cardiac nursing.
“I like the diversity of nursing and the opportunities to move into an area where I can continue to grow personally and enhance my knowledge and associated skills,” he says.
Choosing a new career direction is a big learning curve but it is never too late to pursue your dream job, McCrindle says.
“I would encourage anyone considering a career change or looking for a fresh start to chase their passion and not be afraid to follow their dreams,” he says.
“USQ has supported me in every aspect of my life and provided me with the confidence and courage to persevere and reach my full potential.”
