Rebecca’s fight rolls on
THE legacy of trailblazing sports journalist Rebecca Wilson will live on through groundbreaking breast cancer research being carried out in her name.
The Nelune Foundation has established a research fellowship to honour Wilson, who lost her battle with breast cancer at age 54 this month.
The connection to Wilson is deeply personal for the foundation’s co-founder Nelune Rajapakse. While recovering from breast cancer 16 years ago, Ms Rajapakse was watching Wilson on sports show The Fat and decided to ask if Wilson would host a fundraiser.
Wilson agreed and has since helped the foundation raise $18 million.
The Rebecca Wilson Fellowship in Breast Cancer Research will be launched in February and run for three years. The scholarship has been awarded to Dr Christine Chaffer who will carry out vital work at the Garvan Institute.
