Stay true to Titans
NOW the NRL has decided to push ahead with long-held plans to sell the Gold Coast Titans, we hope Todd Greenberg will keep one thing in mind: The highest bidder will not necessarily be the best buyer.
The last thing the Titans and the city as a whole needs is a cashed-up tycoon swooping in from overseas or interstate and adding the club to their status symbol collection.
We’ve been down that road before. Remember Gold Coast United?
The Clive Palmer-owned soccer club began with promises of an A-League crown in its debut season and an Asian Champions League title to follow. The boss put his private jet at the squad’s disposal.
Then Clive lost interest, distracted by animatronic dinosaurs, rebuilding the Titanic and running a nickel refinery in Townsville which, as it turned out, would end up sharing the same fate as United.
The Titans are more than a gazillionaire’s plaything. Whoever ends ups as owner must understand the true custodians of the club are the fans and the city.
They need passion and perseverance. They need to be in it for the long run.
