TRAINING FOR PANCAKE DAY

-

TUESDAY may be Pancake Day, but that means today is training day.

So pull on your best elasticwaisted pants and head in to Southport’s Gangster and Gatsby cafe for a pancake challenge that won’t leave you flat (although “fat’’ is a distinct possibility).

The Harlem Hatchet features a stack of four dinner-plate size pancakes, complete with peanut butter, Nutella, and marshmallows with chocolate and caramel sauce, big scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream and a sprinkling of peanut butter nibs on top.

Gabrielle Armstrong, from Gangster and Gatsby, advises that while it’s best to share, a grand total of 18 customers have managed to polish off the pancake plate solo.

“I don’t know how they do it,” she says. “My sister and I shared it and we only got a quarter of the way through it. It’s delicious but filling.”

Gabrielle says the cafe will be celebrating Pancake Day – also known as Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, which is the last day before Christian fasting for Lent begins – with the addition of pancake fries to the menu.

Dubbed the Dapper Don, she says the dish features deep-fried pancake strips sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and served with maple syrup or brown sugar syrup. WHERE: Gangster and Gatsby, 56 Scarborough Street, Southport CONTACT: 0415 415 919 PRICE: $24.95 for the Harlem Hatchet
