When plastic sucks you need some steel to be eco-friendly

- EMILY SELLECK

SUCK it up Gold Coasters – stainless steel straws are set to be the next eco-trend.

Grassroots eco-business Boomerang Bags have released a range of the straws in a bid to reduce the growing problem of plastics getting into Coast waterways.

“Plastic straws are just an unnecessary convenience item that we’ve just gotten used to,” co-founder Jordyn de Boer said, adding that the straws were proving popular.

“When we do beach cleanups, plastic straws are probably the biggest problem, they’re light so they blow away really easily, especially from beachside cafes.”

It comes as a video that went viral this week shows a team of scientists off the coast of Costa Rica pull a plastic straw from the nostril of an olive ridley sea turtle.

Trevor Long, director of marine sciences at Sea World, said “plastics in general” were a major problem.

“It’s a huge issue when the plastics break down and birds or young turtles eat these plastics,” he said. “It’s one of the largest problems we’re facing on a global scale.” Sea World uses paper straws.
