Banana chips so appealing

- EMILY SELLECK

THEY’RE the hottest chips in town, but they don’t contain a trace of potato.

Gold Coast foodies have been going bananas for the plantain chips being dished out to diners at popular Pacific Fair restaurant Comuna Cantina.

Owner Tim Johnson said his was one of only a few restaurants on the Coast serving the savoury treat.

“We buy them fresh when they’re green, unrip- ened and really hard,” he said.

“We peel the skin off with a potato peeler like you do with a potato, cut them and deep fry them.”

Mr Johnson said the chips are popular in South America.

“They’re really common over there and there are lots of ways to serve them,” he said.

“But most people don’t even know what a plantain is ... they’re a bit of a novelty menu item and there’s definitely a uniqueness around them.” Mr Johnson said customers were always pleasantly surprised when they tried the chips for the first time.

“People are often surprised because they aren’t sure what they’re going to taste like,” he said.

“But we serve it with guacamole and it’s just a really healthy alternative to other chips.”
