Legend blows in to jazz up music class

- MEGAN BIROT

JAZZ legend James Morrison has hit a few high notes with Gold Coast students, sharing advice on everything musical and instruments.

Coomera Anglican College music students from Years 5 to 12 were treated to a jam with the internationally renowned trumpet player in workshops at the school yesterday. “Play a lot and keep your passion for music and remember why you’re in it,” Morrison told them.

“If you remember the why, it’ll guide you through practice and all the things you have to do to become a musician.

“Look after your instruments because they will become part of you and you want them to last a long time.” Morrison, who lives in Sydney, said he would make regular trips to the Gold Coast for more master classes with The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

“I can’t wait to come back. I’ll the take hot, sticky weather of the Gold Coast over the cold and wet any day.”

Year 6 student James Thompson, 11, said he was surprised by Morrison’s music experience.

“He’s the best trumpeter and I’ll take his advice to play more than I practise because you get more air through the instrument,” he said.

Year 5 student Frankie Barnett, 10, said she could not believe how high-pitched the trumpet could be played.

The pint-sized orchestra closed the hour-long music workshop playing Bunyip Blue with Morrison on the trumpet.
