UP TO 100 motorbike riders will thunder through the countryside as part of the RSPCA’s Ruff Riders fundraiser today.

Pimpama local Andrew Gough, 35, will be there on his Yamaha R1 sports bike, cruising around the 200km track from Wacol out through to Boonah, Mt Tamborine and Mt Cotton.

The 35-year-old has raised nearly $800 for the animal charity but expects more money to filter through over the weekend.

“This year has been really good,” he said.

“But I’m hoping to hit the $1000 mark.” THE State Government has been accused of abandoning Gold Coast domestic violence victims after failing to support the LNP’s tough new laws.

The proud owner of rescued dogs Candice the German shepherd and Summer the labrador, Mr Gough said the event allowed him to make a difference for animals.

“I don’t do a lot of donations, but I like to take the time out to do this,” he said.

“I like to give animals a voice.

“I’ve always loved animals, even though they chew my shoes and furniture.”

RSPCA media and relations manager Michael Beatty said that the Ruff Riders event could raise up to $20,000.

The LNP’s Private Members Bill would have ensured domestic violence offenders could be fitted with GPS trackers and, as part of their bail conditions, alerts sent to their victims warning of their release.

Opposition prevention of domestic violence spokeswoman Ros Bates said Labor’s stance was a slap in the face for victims and their families.

She accused the Labor committee members of supporting civil libertarians and the rights of perpetrators, and placing them above the safety of victims.

“It is nothing short of shameful for Labor to rip up years of bipartisanship on tackling domestic violence at the expense of cheap politicking,” Ms Bates said.

The LNP’s Private Members Bill was based on working laws in other states and the recommendations of the Not Now Not Ever report.

The committee’s report found it was not possible to determine the cost of implementing the new laws.

The three LNP members on the committee include Coast MPs Michael Crandon and Jann Stuckey, and they voiced their disgust at the Bill not being supported.

In the report, they said: “There are no words to express how shameful it would be for the Legislative Assembly to reject this Bill.”
