Modern library joins age of 3D

LIBRARIES were once quiet places where people were frowned upon for sneezing.

Now residents are using their 3D printers to stimulate their small business.

The abundance of the latest technology and wide range of resources have made the library the place to be when working on building a company.

“We have had a few success stories,” Gold Coast Libraries city librarian Marian Morgan-Bindon said.

“We had one lady who used the 3D printer to print jewellery to sell online in her Etsy store and was able to make quite a good business out of that.”

A large 3D printer is at Helensvale library and a smaller printer is shared between the other libraries.

Use of the printers requires a booking and the cost of the final printed product is charged by weight.

Librarians monitor use of the printer to ensure nothing untoward is being printed.

The computer systems are also increasing­ly popular with more than 8000 people visiting a Gold Coast library every day last year.
