LONG before Big Bang The

ory made comic-book conventions cool, Australia’s Supanova Pop Culture Expo was born.

The Aussie expo, which is expected to draw up to 35,000 science fiction fans and cosplayers to the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre at Broadbeach this weekend was founded 15 years ago by Daniel Zachariou.

“We have one of our biggest headliners ever this year in David Boreanaz,” Mr Zachariou said.

“He’s just finished doing 12 years of Bones so a lot of people are excited to see him.

“There’s a great assortment of events on the program. It definitely has a San Diego Comic-Con feel.”

Mr Zachariou said the limited-number $800 VIP tickets had almost sold out.

“There’s that exclusive element to it that people really like,” he said.

“It’s the convention that everybody comes to from all over Australia because people love the Gold Coast.

“It’s also been mutually beneficial having the Gold Coast Film Festival at the same time as us ... we have created a superhero weekend with them.”

Along with celebrities like

Buffy’s David Boreanaz, The Hobbit’s Manu Bennett and Blindspot’s Luke Mitchell, science fiction fans will mingle with cast and crew from seven different film productions, in

cluding Science Fiction Volume One: The Osiris Child and Garrison 7.

Supanova has also appointed its first ‘Supa-Star Ambassador’, cinematic veteran John Jarratt, whose iconic role as Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek has established him as a genre legend.
