MOST people are aware of the treatment Vietnam Veterans received when we returned home.

As a proud ex-infantry solider I attended the Nerang Anzac Service and while on the footpath waiting for the march to assemble a young couple approached me advising their little boy had a few questions.

Could I please explain the significance of my medals? Which I did.

What was the food like? He said he had heard it was terrible. I explained the food was OK, even ration packs as they contained tubes of condensed milk and raspberry jam.

Were the Anzac biscuits good? I told him we did get biscuits but not as nice as Anzacs. As little “Connor” thanked me (I think he was about 7 years old), he said he had one last thing to say. He looked up at me and said that I made him feel very proud.

I wanted to share this experience as his comments made me feel the best I have felt about myself for many years. Out of the mouths of babes. PATRICK SMYTHE, NERANG THE poisonous stand-off between Turnbull and Abbott is beyond repair, though John Howard won’t shirk his duty to try to bring together a modus vivendi between the two antagonists.

Even without this disruption and disharmony, Shorten wins. perhaps GG Cosgrove is best suited to the task. DAVID HALL, LABRADOR IT’S as if the Palaszczuk Government couldn’t get into any more trouble.

Custody allegations aside, the racing fraternity along with punters must be totally dismayed at drainage issues putting serious doubt to the prospects of a fair track at Eagle Farm ( GCB, 27/4).

The Winter Carnival moves to that venue tomorrow and respected trainers are already panning the $10 million redevelopment.

Time will tell I know but it seems pretty accurate that the government has yet again got things so terribly wrong.

Grace Grace has a lot to answer for, along with other ministers. KEN JOHNSTON, ROCHEDALE SOUTH PAULINE Hanson, Peter Dutton and the right in Malcolm Turnbull zoo have effectively taken over the government when it comes to asylum seekers and those wanting Australian citizenship.

Which is taking this country back to those days where the likes of Hanson and Dutton saw fit to demonise those seeking asylum and those who wanted citizenship.

Malcolm Turnbull’s days are numbered and it is only of time before Dutton finds he has the numbers and taps Turnbull on the shoulder. D.J. FRASER, CURRUMBIN

YASSMIN Abdel-Magied should face mandatory deportation for her shocking comments on Anzac Day. She is clearly un-Australian and doesn’t belong here.

I am by no means racist but it’s people like her that make me understand why racism exists. JOHN Z
