Tostee on kids, life, jail and that balcony

-

GABLE Tostee says he reached out to the family of Kiwi tourist Warriena Wright twice following her death from his 14th-floor apartment, but “they didn’t want to hear from me”.

“It’s the first thing I wanted to do after the incident. And it was the first thing I wanted to do after the trial,” he said..

“I wanted ... to just give them my condolences but what we heard back was that they didn’t want to hear from me, so I just respected that and there is nothing much you can do – that’s their choice. I just thought I owed it to them to offer them my condolences.”

In his first extensive interview about life, the former Tinder playboy – acquitted of Ms Wright’s murder last October – reveals:

* He considers the night Ms Wright died the apocalypse. “I think it’s appropriate because when that happened, everything changed. I basically moved back in with my parents and I’ve been staying there since. It’s not too bad (living back at home) but it just makes me feel like a teenager again.”

* It is “probably inevitable” he will forever be recognised as an accused “balcony killer”.

* His story has brought “celebrity status” with people approaching him for a photograph when he goes out at night.

* He no longer “wears out” his thumbs on dating app Tinder. “It’s not like the good old days – I barely had a thumb left.”

* He has no desire to start a family. “I didn’t like being a kid; I just wanted to be an adult. When I was a kid I just wanted to be an adult so I could do my own thing.”

Tostee also talked about studying to be an architect, being compared to disgraced American OJ Simpson, accusations of being a “ladies’ man”, life in prison being Groundhog Day and warning his mother to stop filling up the fridge. “You’ve gotta watch the gut”.
