OUR very perceptive Mayor Tom Tate claims “we’re friends with everyone” ( GCB, 24/5).

He says because Australia is an isolated and friendly country, a terrorist attack will not happen here.

The Brits have had many decades living with potential terrorist attacks and are very good at responding to anything that happens.

But according to Tom’s understanding of such violence, terrorists only carry out attacks in Europe and the Middle East – they don’t know the world is round and there are targets for them here.

News reports often show characters with dubious motives using smart phones and drones which are capable of triggering explosive devices. The perpetrator of the Manchester attack was born in England and was under watch but it still occurred.

Tom’s anti-terror squad should take notice of the social trends in world affairs rather than him.

My family and I express our condolences for all those people affected by that act of violence. GRAEME BREWER

SOME time ago, the Southport Chamber of Commerce was concerned the ocean views of Southport, Labrador, Biggera Waters would be blocked by highrise buildings on the Spit.

Many would be disadvantaged for the benefit of a few.

The Chamber of Commerce persuaded the council to adopt the three-storey limit, which benefits many and is still in place today. JOE FEENEY

BRITISH High Commissioner Menna Rawlings, in a statement at Parliament House, has described the Manchester attack as being an “awful incident” adding “that the UK remains highly resilient”.

Ms Rawlings says: “Our values of freedom and liberty and democracy will hold true, and we will not now or in the future be defeated by terrorism.”

Sadly, she is delusional. Britain, like most of the Western world, refuses to recognise there is a problem with Islam. That, in itself, is defeat. When children are slaughtered as a result of incompetent political leaders and policy, liberty and freedom cease to exist.

Forget resilience and candles. It’s time for governments, including Australia, to take action, implement sensible policies to protect their citizens, or be complicit in the destruction of our civilisation. DEBBIE ROBINSON

CAN’ T believe people are protesting about the sale of Bruce Bishop Carpark.

When Charles Hicks gifted the land to council back in 1938 Surfers was just a small coastal village.

Locals were within walking distance as only the wealthy owned cars back then.

He could not foresee the land is worth tens of millions today in Australia’s biggest tourist city where almost every adult owns a motor vehicle.

Would Eddy Sarroff and Hans Torv prefer to pay higher rates to fund infrastructure projects and other maintenance of parks? They probably can afford it but I can’ t. THE DOMINATER
