Surfer in Bali pool tragedy

- BILL HOFFMAN

A 31-YEAR-OLD Queensland man has died in tragic circumstances in Bali, where he was holidaying with a group of friends for a mate’s wedding.

Tyler Kennedy, a carpenter from the Sunshine Coast, was found on the bottom of a pool in the villa he was staying in at Canggu after going for a swim about 8pm Wednesday.

He was found when friend Jake Townsend, with whom he had travelled extensively around the world surfing and who worked with him last year on the Gold Coast, went looking to see what he was doing.

Mate Dean Carpenter, of Caloundra, said Jake and others had attempted to revive their friend by doing CPR but had been unsuccessful.

Friends not in Bali for the wedding of Daryl Cook gathered in Caloundra on Thursday afternoon to mourn the loss of Tyler – a member of the town’s surfing community.

Mr Carpenter said a large group had been in Bali for the wedding held two days before Tyler’s death.

“He was at the villa at about 8pm when he decided to go for a swim,” Dean said.

“Ten minutes had passed before Jake found him on the bottom of the pool. The families all grew up together.

“Jake and Tyler travelled the world together surfing. He did a lot of work away and last year worked on the Gold Coast with Jake.”

The groom, Mr Cook, described him as “one of the greatest guys I have met in my life” on social media

“He worked for me, drank with me, laughed with me, and cried with me ... Love you mate,” he wrote on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the family of an Australian man who had died in Bali was being provided with consular assistance.
