She says she doesn’t want the Gold Coast to be a “casino city”, so why is her government proposing to destroy publicly owned green space for yet another casino?

Most locals don’t want the proposed mega-casino but the State Labor government isn’t listening.

It’s no surprise seeing as they’ve happily taken tens of thousands of dollars from the Chinese consortium behind the Spit mega-casino and their business partners.

Research from Tourism Australia shows tourists come to places like the Gold Coast for beaches and natural wilderness, not to lose money hand over fist at a casino.

AS REPORTED ( GCB, 5/7), dead plovers were found on the runway which has been linked to the emergency landing of an AirAsia jet.

This should not have happened as airports across Australia including Gold Coast Airport have failed to implement proven strategies which mitigate this problem.

I had a client who tried in vain to implement these strategies across Australia with lukewarm response as airport administrators just tended to procrastinate.

These strategies are not expensive but, of course, most airports are privately owned so safety takes a back seat to the mighty dollar.

Not much can be done to mitigate striking birds after an airliner has left the airport perimeter but this is a much lower risk as typically we don’t have great populations of birds flying at altitude. GARY, GOLD COAST

IT’S all too common to hear angry cries about politicians rorting their parliamentary expenses.

Why the outcry? Because the likes of Bronwyn Bishop’s little jaunt in Europe before leaving the system handsomely rewarded and now Clive Palmer’s greed has him making a claim for something that is, after all, petty cash for him.

These people aren’t being brought to task for their actions because the powers that be can’t be shaken form their torpor. D.J. FRASER, GOLD COAST

I HAVE always voted for the LNP and had admiration for Tony Abbott but he has to realise the people wanted him out and someone had to fill his spot.

What he is doing to Malcolm Turnbull, however, is disrespectful and he needs to stop saying he’s doing it for the party.

Well, Mr Abbott you’re not, you are splitting the party and I don’t believe you will get back in even if that’s your secret aim. I, for one, won’t vote for you again.

Let Mr Turnbull get on with the job and stop destroying the LNP. JD, BURLEIGH HEADS
