FALL OF THE GIANTS Tinkler job bid fizzles

Meeting in NY proved fruitless

-

NATHAN Tinkler’s trip to New York for a job interview in February has backfired.

The bankrupt former billionaire remains unemployed and residing in Australia after an unsuccessful job application with a mining consultancy in Manhattan.

A lack of income has not stopped Mr Tinkler from continuing to travel the globe, with the former mining magnate recently flying to Hawaii for his son’s birthday.

Mr Tinkler was declared bankrupt in March last year with debts of about $554 million. He has been banned from managing businesses in Australia until February 2019.

The former owner of the Newcastle Knights was granted access to his passport in February so he could travel to Manhattan for a job interview.

Speaking in Federal Court in January, Mr Tinkler said the job was with a mining consultancy looking for new business opportunities in the Australian and Indonesian coal markets.

Insolvency expert Max Donnelly was appointed Mr Tinkler’s new bankruptcy trustee last month.

Ferrier Hodgson partner Robyn Duggan, who is working with Mr Donnelly on the Tinkler matter, said Mr Tinkler was still looking for work.

“He’s not working at all and he didn’t get the job,” Ms Duggan said.

Mr Tinkler has been jobless since September 30 last year.

His February trip to the US included the stop in New York for the interview followed by a visit to the Hawaiian island of Maui. His father Leslie paid the bill.

Ms Duggan said Mr Tinkler – who claims he is broke – recently returned to Hawaii.

“I think it was for his son’s birthday or something for his last trip,” she said.
