Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin

I agree we probably have all been guilty of that. What is an example?

A QI played 14 games for Queensland, but all everybody wants to talk about is nine (Origins). Don’t those other five count? it has lost a lot of respect it deserves. The jersey didn’t change for me, it still had a Q on it. I hear you once scored more than 50 tries in one season. Is that true?

QQYou played in an era when Manly and Parramatta were financial giants, back in the presalary cap days. Do you like the cap that the NRL has now? No, not at all. I understand it, it was brought about by limiting the spend for clubs so they can survive. That in itself, to me, isn’t commerce, that’s protectionism and reeks of control. But why did some poorer clubs, like Newtown, disappear along the way? Yes, the poorer clubs do disappear. But at the end of the day do we look at why they disappear? Is it because they didn’t have any players? Or they didn’t have the right business skills or somebody was ripping them off at some point? Or they weren’t in the right demographics. So they limit the players earnings to control the competition. I can’t see any incentive in that. In your days with Manly how many grand finals did you play in? I played in two and we lost them both. The Parramatta team back then in the 1980s was absolutely amazing. They had names like Cronin, Ella, Kenny, Sterling, Price., O’Reilly, Hilditch. There wasn’t anybody in their side who wasn’t any good. But Manly also had quite a few big names in their side, didn’t they? Yes, our team wasn’t bad either. We had 12 internationals in our run-on side: guys like Ribot, Boustead, Cleal, Gerard.
