US air­man to re­turn

MORE than 73 years af­ter crash­ing into the Pa­cific Ocean dur­ing World War II, a US air­man is com­ing home.

The fam­ily of 2nd Lieu­tenant Don­ald Un­der­wood got the news last week­end dur­ing a meet­ing with the US De­fence De­part­ment.

Mr Un­der­wood’s re­mains were iden­ti­fied among those re­cently dis­cov­ered on the Pa­cific is­land of Kiri­bati.

He was aboard a bomber when it crashed.

Mr Un­der­wood will be buried at Ar­ling­ton Na­tional Ceme­tery. His medals in­clude the Dis­tin­guished Fly­ing Cross.
