THE reality of the M1 situation is very simple. It’s a federal road and therefore the Federal Government’s responsibility with a smaller input via the State Government.

Unfortunately for the Gold Coast all our federal politicians are LNP members and they are very secure in the electorate meaning they are not interested in spending federal funds as they believe they will be re-elected on merit alone.

Couple this with a Labor State Government that has pleaded to the federal LNP for extra funding and you have the perfect political environment for the Gold Coast to receive nothing.

The only answer for the state LNP is to offer the old “it’s all Labor’s fault”, as shown by your article (GCB, 4/10).

There is a need for both political parties to realise they are here to serve the people and not purely be there for re-election. STEVE TOYER, NERANG I DO not doubt that we need development on the Gold Coast but we should be laying down the rules.

I notice we have quite a few developments going on between Main Beach and Broadbeach right on the beach front with no restrictions. In my opinion this is just crazy, especially on The Esplanade.

Up to 90 storeys being thrown around and no consideration given to over shadowing of the beach.

Either keep it to 20 storeys on the beach front or at least make the developers build at the back of the block, with the pool area at the front of the building.

I have noticed the beach is virtually empty when it is overcast or in shade in the afternoon.

Surfers Paradise is known for its beach. People who come here love the sun, so why change that when we don’t have to?

I have written to the mayor on this subject and his answer was, “I regret I cannot please everyone”. So who is he pleasing? Don’t let our biggest asset disappear. Go ahead with development but under our rules.

I would like to appeal to every one on the Council, State and Federal members please look into this.

I also hope people contact the relevant authorities raising this matter before it is too late. PETER ROBERTS, SURFERS PARADISE WOULD Crime and Corruption Commission chairman Alan MacSporran consider running for parliament (GCB, 6/10)?

He is fearless, articulate and honest, the last quality being sadly lacking in our politicians and clearly pointed out in the CCC local government report. JENNIFER HORSBURGH, ELANORA AS WELL as the government having our photos anyone convicted of a crime from DUI to GBH should have fingerprints and DNA taken.

This would deter anyone from committing any more crimes especially sex crimes as old cases could come back to bite you.

We should not worry about what civil libertarians say as they are not the ones that have had crimes against them.

If you do a crime at any time, then you do the time. DARBY
