PUNTERS SOCK IT TO FASHIONS ON FIELD

- KATE PARASKEVOS

GOLD Coast men will be able to feel the breeze on their ankles for the first time at the city’s turf club this Melbourne Cup Day.

The Gold Coast Turf Club has announced it will follow the lead of major racecourse Flemington and give way to trend, relaxing their strict dress rules for the day.

The relaxation will allow men to go sockless, to show their “mankles”, and women to wear playsuits, jumpsuits and dress shorts.

Gold Coast Turf Club’s Aquis Park marketing manager Anne Reynolds said while thongs, singlets and tracksuits were shunned, punters had more variety for race day wear.

“Ladies can wear smart casual day wear, playsuits, jumpsuits, maxi dresses or light, flowing dresses and dress shorts,” she said.

“Men can lose the jacket and tie, they can wear a smart button-up shirt, or polo paired with rolled chinos or tailored shorts, just no T-shirts.”

While traditionally women have flaunted their fashions, the spotlight is now shining on the guys with new Fashions on the Field categories, including best beard, best socks and best-dressed couple.

Fashion blogger, Carolyn Waller, said socks could really make a statement.

“This (wearing socks), is the male equivalent of a handbag,” she said. “There are two trends for men regarding socks — one is the mankle, which is no socks, and the other is a primary coloured sock worn with suit pants.”

For the women, Ms Waller said flower crowns were out.
