Pumped up on pills
Ex-gym boss had more than 1000 steroid tablets
FORMER gym owner Dane Hutchinson used to take up to 10 tablets a day just to maintain his Adonis-like figure.
He’d inject steroids to bulk himself up or take performance-enhancing drugs to ensure he had the look he needed to keep the modelling contracts coming in.
Hutchinson would also swallow a host of pharmaceutical medicines to try and lessen the damage the drugs were causing his body.
But it didn’t take long for the 35-year-old former Burleigh Heads gym owner to lose it all.
In June, he was charged with possessing dangerous and restricted drugs after police raided his Currumbin Valley home and found more than 1000 steroid tablets and eight vials of testosterone.
They also found 150 tablets or restricted medicine.
Hutchinson, who used to part own Burleigh Heads Physique Performance Centre, pleaded guilty to the offences in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday.
Even his lawyer, Campbell MacCallum, said Hutchinson “was taking a large amount of drugs” because he was “seeking attention” in the gym culture. He said the 35-year-old had since lost his modelling contracts and gym ownership and had been seeking counselling.
“These offences are very serious but it’s not as though he was violent,” Mr MacCallum said. “This was a man sitting at home eating chicken and vegetables and going to the gym. He did this to his own body.
“He is a simple man who is now unemployed due to his mental health state.”
Hitchinson was sentenced to a 12 month probation order and 150 hours of community service.
Magistrate Christopher Callaghan said the community service should act as a reminder of his offending and help Hutchinson to “get off the hideous regimen” he had been on.
