WARREN OUT TO UNCOVER TRUE VALUE

-

I’ll admit I love a bit of Antiques

Roadshow action.

I enjoy the joy when someone discovers their $1 op-shop buy is worth a mint.

Or, even better, I delight in the dismay when that vase inherited from grandma is worth less than the bag of jellybeans she used to give you.

OK, maybe I’m just mean. Which means karma is probably out to get me if I venture down to The Arts Centre Gold Coast today for their Antiques and Collectibles Valuation Day.

Actually, it’s not even karma. It’s Kmart.

I know exactly what the value of my home furnishings are … because they’re all from the latest special K catalogue.

But for those who have home goods that are actually good, this is a date not to be missed.

So dust off your trinkets and

treasures and find out what they’re worth as Warren Joel, one of Australia’s foremost registered valuers, dishes out verbal appraisals.

“I see everything and anything … that’s all part of the fun,” says Warren.

“I’ve had someone bring in some pottery from Picasso before – and plenty of people who have brought in a beloved fake.

“But I think the enjoyment of these sessions is not about the monetary value we uncover, but the story of what these objects are and who they came from.

“Whether grandma’s vase is worth anything or not is actually of less value than what it tells the owner about their grandma.

“In the end, it’s really a day of storytelling. For me, it’s also a day of amateur psychology as you really have to be able to read your client when it comes to how to break the news – good or bad.”

The valuation day is presented by Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast with Gold Coast City Gallery. Funds raised support Gold Coast City Art Gallery programs and acquisitions.
